Online Ethnography

                                                                      Sebastián Yatra
I emerged myself in an online group who likes this Latin singer, Sebastián yatra. They callthemselves the “Forever Yatras”. People who join this community have a very extensive level oflove towards this singer. I noticed that most of the people in this community are girls in the ages between 15 years – 24 years old. This fanbase community is very strong in the countries; Colombia, Argentina, Brazil and Chile. There are many other countries that from part of this online community, but they are not as strong as in these countries. Sebastián Yatra, he’s aColombian singer, he is a very appealing man which is one of the reasons that his fanbase is sobbing and strong, he’s also well known for his great voice.

This community that I emerged myself into, uses the Instagram platform to interact with each other,  this Instagram page is very famous-amongst this so called “Forever Yatra” online community. The way girls interact with each other is simple; usually the girls who own a fan account, they post all the information they get from Yatra and then they use their platforms to inform the other girls and in that way they talk aboutwhat he’s doing and how they are happy or even sad about his decisions. After emerging myselfin this community, I noticed how people can actually be in love with someone whom they don’teven know, it was crazy for me to see all this girls talking about Yatra in such a way that people would believe them if they said that they know this man. Also, this community shares videos of the concerts that Yatra is constantly giving, they also give updates about upcoming show dates, and one of the most common things that is done in this group is “fangirl” about Sebastián Yatra. I find it super helpful for people that know they are able to join these types of “fanbases or online communities” because people get to express they feelings for something that a lot of people maynot understand and also may judge, but in these groups they talk with people that are feeling the same way about the same topic, so it gives freedom being able to form part of an online community. In fanbases, love is so strong that they would buy anything just to form part of that group. Sebastián Yatra has an online store of his merch , in this group that I have been observing a lot of girls cry whenever they get their merch delivered, they put videos on their Instagram Stories to show people that they got their merch. It is very interesting to observe all these behaviors that outside society would judge so hard and makes the online communities very successful because of that.
As I mentioned before, I believe that being able to join online communities of your interests is such a good thing, and one of the major advantages of this is that people get to know people from all over the world and get to connect in a certain way because they already have a topic to talk and discuss. Communication is so important and so is expression, being able to express your feelings towards any topic and people caring about your opinion is very important, and joining these communities gives you the liberty of expression. I have seen how people shut down theiremotions for a certain thing just because they don’t have anyone to discuss it with, this is a wayin which people benefit from joining these online communities, they get to be happy and not embarrassed for something that causes them any emotion.

Forming part of an online community also has its drawbacks, if you get deeply emerged in a community, it is very common to forget that there is a world outside our devices and that there are many other things that matter in the world not only being able to express yourself and making friends that like the same things as you do. There is a type of disconnection with

humanity and society, usually teens now a day's struggle when it comes to interaction with “real people”, face to face conversations are getting hard to have because of these problems. Another problem generated from this; responsibilities, a lot of teens feel like the world owes them everything and they get so into whatever online communities that get involved and they forget they have responsibilities like school just to give an example, bad influences may also cross ahead because there is no control on what people say because of freedom of expression, but when young people consume all these data that makes them rebel, there is no stop. That is one of the most controversial things about the online communities, you are free to express whateveryou’re feeling or you believe, but also there are people that may get offended or may follow what you’re saying without knowing if that is wrong or good. Other than that, I feel like there are many more advantages rather than disadvantages of online communities.
Online communities have taught me that I have no reason to be ashamed of liking something or even someone, because we all do, it is a human thing to do. Emerging myself in this online community has been fun because you see how people get excited over things and the you even get excited and its very funny. There are many ways in which people do online communities; blogs, vlogs, Twitter, Facebook, Instagram and many more. My online community mostly interact with Instagram, providing any kind of information. Their dynamic is very simple;anyone gets information, sends it to any owner of fan account and then “fangirl” about it. I had so much fun observing this group of girls loving Sebsastián Yatra, their comments made melaugh so hard. I am thankful that we’re living in this era because we have access to so manythings that helps our communication.
Here’s a video for you to know who Sebastián Yatra is.
